Getting the Idea

  • A fraction names part of a whole. The numerator is the top number in a fraction. It tells the numebr of equal parts included in the fraction.

  • The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction. It tells the total number of equal parts that make up the whole.

Unit Fractions

  • A fraction with 1 as its numerator is called a unit fraction.

  • All fractions are built from unit fractions, such as 1/6.

  • For example, the number line shows one whole from 0 to 1. In 1/6 the whole is broken into 6 equal parts.
