First Engagement Strategy: 30-30-30

  • This is an amazing strategy designed for Digital Learning AND that works in person. I will show you how to do it over Digital Learning.

  • The basic concept is this: You give students a timed and systematic method of answering questions.

  • You do 30 seconds for thinking, 30 seconds for typing, 30 seconds for sending. Then, teacher will ask those to share after. I will now demonstrate.

3

First, ask the question. I will start with an easy, no wrong answer question:

What is your favorite genre of literature? (fantasy, science fiction, self-help, non-fiction poetry, etc.)

  • For 30 seconds.....think about it!

  • (During this section, students just think. NO TYPING. They need to practice thinking before they write)

4

During this section, the students type their answer:

What is your favorite genre of literature? (fantasy, science fiction, self-help, non-fiction poetry, etc.)

  • For 30 seconds.....type your answer!

  • Sentence Frame: My favorite genre of literature is _____.

5

During this section, the students finish typing and send their answers. YOU MUST PRAISE EVERYONE YOU CAN DURING THIS TIME WHO ANSWERS!!!

What is your favorite genre of literature? (fantasy, science fiction, self-help, non-fiction poetry, etc.)

  • For 30 seconds.....send your answer!

  • Sentence Frame: My favorite genre of literature is _____.

6

During this section, the teacher will share answers and select 1-3 students to share their answers out loud.

  • TEACHER SHARE OUT OF STUDENT ANSWERS

  • PRO TIP: You can send a student a private chat message to say you are going to ask them to speak out loud!!!! This will alleviate anxiety with public speaking!

Strategy 2: Discussion Stems

  • In class, students often do not know how to respond to each other.

  • To fix this, we can use DISCUSSION STEMS. You saw me use a SENTENCE STEM last slide to help with writing.

10

Discussion Stems

  • Discussion Stem: I agree with _____ but would like to add _______.

  • Discussion Stem: I respectfully disagree with _____ because _______.

  • These actually work perfectly after you have students share out after a 30-30-30. You can also use these when you have students responding to one another's answers when writing or answering comprehension questions.

Strategy 3: Wheel of Names!

  • You can use a website called wheelofnames.com to make a wheel that randomly selects someone's name! It keeps students on their toes, makes sure they pay attention, and is equitable because it allows for all students to have an equal opportunity to speak

  • HOWEVER....you need to gauge the needs of your students because some students DO NOT LIKE TO SPEAK. If you FORCE them to speak, they may disengage forever.

  • I, as a result, don't use these. My classroom environment makes it so I don't have to. However, almost all the other teacher I work with use it!
