What does Tagalog mean?

  • "Tagalog is “taga-ilog” meaning someone from the river. The “ilog” or river referred to here is most likely what is today the Pasig river, along the banks of which civilization, trade, and culture flourished". (Anderson, 2016).

What is similar and different between the terms Hiligaynon and Ilonggo?

  • "The term “Ilonggo” now refers to the people who inhabit Iloilo, Guimaras Island, and Negros Occidental, the western part of Negros island, which is separated from Panay by the Guimaras Strait. The language and the culture of the Ilonggo people are called Hiligaynon.” (Barrios, et al., 2018).

  • “Ilonggo” may also be popularly and informally used as a synonym for “Hiligaynon.” (Barrios et al,, 2018).

What does Hiligaynon/Ilonggo mean?

  • "The term “Hiligaynon” is said to be a hispanized contraction of the phrase manog-ilig sang kawayan, meaning “bamboo floaters.” (Barrios, et al., 2018).

  • "Ilonggo” comes from the name of a tree (Lat. Elaeocarpus, aka kalomala), which has fragrant white flowers and purplish to red-black, stone-shaped fruit. Iloilo, the Ilonggo’s home province, is named after “an evergreen tree [Aglaia Argentea] with a dense, rounded crown; it can grow up to thirty meters tall." (Barrios, et al., 2018).
