Types of verbs in Italian
In Italian there are 4 categories of verbs. They are irregulars, are, ere and ire verbs. -ARE, -ERE and -IRE verbs are classified that way because those are the letters those types of verbs end with and they follow a pattern when we conjugate them.
Irregulars - essere and avere
-ARE - parlare, mangiare, giocare...
-ERE - scrivere, leggere, prendere...
-IRE - dormire, offrire, servire...

Verb Conjugation
As a reminder, verb conjugation is changing the ending of a verb to indicate who/what we are talking to/about. An unconjugated verb is known as an infinitive verb.
-ARE, -ERE and -IRE verbs will follow patterns meaning that all -are verbs are conjugated the same way, all -ere verbs are conjugated the same way and all -ire verbs are conjugated the same way. Those patterns make it easy to use even brand new verbs we have never learned before.
5
Multiple Choice
Verbs that end in -are such as parlare, giocare and guardare all have different endings/conjugations.
vero
falso
6
-ARE Verbs
We previously learned about -are verbs. We learned that when conjugating -are verbs, the first step is to DROP THE -ARE and then add the appropriate ending. Below is an example of an are verb conjugation pattern.
Lavorare - to work (this verb is currently written in the infinitive form)
Conjugations of lavorare - io lavoro, tu lavori, lui/lei lavora, noi lavoriamo, voi lavorate, loro lavorano.
7
-are, -ere and -ire conjugations
To the right is a comparison of -are, -ere and -ire verbs. You see that the first thing to be done is to drop the -are, -ere and -ire and then add the appropriate conjugation in red. As you can see, the io, tu and noi conjugations are the same for all 3.
8
-ere and -ire conjugations
The -ere and -ire verb conjugation is identical except for the voi (you all) conjugation.
9
Multiple Choice
