2

Function vs Relation

  • In order to be a function, x CANNOT repeat.

  • If any x-values repeat with different y-values, then it is a relation.

  • For graphs, use the vertical line test; if a vertical line would touch the graph more than once, then it is NOT a function.

Function Notation

  • If you are asked to find f(-3), then plug in a value of -3 for x and simplify in your calculator.

  • If it says f(x)=5, then set the equation equal to 5 and solve for x.

  • On a graph: If it says f(-3), go to -3 on the X-AXIS and then go up and over to find y. If it says f(x)=5, go to 5 on the Y-AXIS and then go over and down to find x.

7

Multiple Choice

Domain and Range

  • Domain is all the possible x-values

  • Range is all the possible y-values

  • From a table, mapping, or coordinates: Just list the x-values for domain and list the y-values for range

  • From a graph: Read the graph from LEFT to RIGHT for DOMAIN and read it BOTTOM to TOP for RANGE.

10

Multiple Choice

For the function {(0,1), (1,-3), (2,-4), (-4,1)}, identify the domain and range.

1

D: {1, -3, -4,}

R: {0, 1, 2, -4}

2

D:{0, 1, 2, -4}

R:{1, -3, -4}

3

D:{0, 1, 2, 3, 4}

R:{1, -3, -4}

11

Exponential vs Linear

  • Linear: Constantly ADDING or SUBTRACTING on y

  • Exponential: Constantly MULTIPLYING or DIVIDING on y

  • For linear and exponential graphs, remember to use DESMOS!
