The present participle verb form is created by adding -ing to the root word. It is called Gerund.

  •  Examples: swimming, laughing, playing. reading, dancing, writing, etc.

  • The present participle can function as an adjective or a noun.

indicates that an action or condition is happening now, frequently, and may continue into the future. The Present Continuous Formula: to be [am, is, are] + -ing form of the verb.

  • The present continuous functions as a verb.

The present perfect tense refers to an action that occurred at an indefinite time in the past. An action that was done in the past and was completed at an indefinite time in the past.

  • Examples:

  • We have talked before.

  • She has served the meal.

  • She has just watered the plants.

The present perfect tense also refers to an action that has started in the past, and still is in effect up to present.

  • Examples:

  • I have taught in this institution since 2005.

  • They have lived in Pampanga since 1998.

  • Kim has not called for eight months.

The present perfect tense of verb is formed by using has or have + the past participle form of the verb.

  • Has is used when the subject of the sentence is a singular noun or any of the pronouns He, She, It.

  • Example: Eric has forgotten his folder.

  • Have is used when the subject of the sentence is a plural noun or any of the pronouns I, We, You, They.

  • Example: We have walked on this path before.

The past perfect tense is used to make it clear that one event happened before another in the past.

  • When we reached the school, the bell had rung.

  • The children had cleaned the room when the teacher came.

  • The train had just left when I arrived at the station.

  • When the police arrived, the thief had escaped.

The past perfect tense is formed by using had + the past participle form of the verb.

  • HAD + Past Participle Form of the Verb

  • Example: She had just left the scene when the ambulance arrived.

  • We had met him before the party.

  • The plane had left by the time I got to the airport.

  •  I had written the email before he apologized.

  • The weather changed, but the team had planned its next move.

The Future Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that will have been completed at some point in the future. 

  • The future perfect tense is often used with a time expression that identifies a point in the future. 

  • It is formed by using will have + the past participle form of the verb.

  • Examples:

  • John will have baked a cake before you arrive.


  • They will have painted the fence before I have a chance to speak to

    them.
