Conjunctions

  • are used to join clauses, phrases, and words together for constructing sentences.

  • make a link between/among words or groups of words to other parts of the sentence and show a relationship between/among them

  • help join thoughts, actions and ideas, as well as clauses and phrases into one

Subordinating conjunction

  • a type of conjunction that connects or joins an independent clause with a subordinate clause

Independent clause

a clause that can exist by itself in a given sentence which means that it doesn’t need any additional information to exist because it can stand alone as a complete sentence


Example: Jin fell asleep and forgot to do his homework.

Subordinate or dependent clause

one which cannot exist or stand alone by itself as a sentence and only provides some additional information to the main clause (independent clause)


Example: When Jin studied in the coffee shop
