Engineering Types: Day 1
Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical
2
Multiple Choice
What is an Engineer?
Someone who wants to know how to fix an engine
Someone who wants to build houses
Someone who wants to solve problems and build connections
Someone who collects engines
3
Engineering
There are many different types of engineering work. Each engineering field is designed to solve different kinds of problems in the world.
4
Today you will learn about:
Mechanical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Chemical Engineering
5
All Engineers must:
Work to solve problems by testing different solutions.
Create a solution within the design constraints (example: budget, time to work).
Communicate their designs to other people and share their learning.
6
Multiple Choice
Which word best describes a constraint?
option
opportunity
limitation
goal
7
Multiple Choice
In the Engineering Process, does your first prototype need to be the most efficient?
No, sometimes you need to try again
Yes, you need it to be perfect from the beginning
If it doesn't work the first time, then it probably won't ever work.
8
Mechanical Engineers
Mechanical engineers work with engines and motors to create solutions that make life simpler for people.
Check out the next video to see a robot developed by Mechanical Engineers at Oregon State University.
9
10
Typical Work
Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest engineering fields.
These engineers create machines that produce power like electric generators, and combustion engines.
They also work on cars or trucks, robots, and heating or cooling systems.
Mechanical engineers can do a lot!
11
Watch the next slide to see a typical mechnical engineer at work.
12
13
Multiple Choice
What task would a mechanical engineer do?
Create new formulas and medicines
Manage waste disposal and sustainability
Build machines and engines to help make life easier
14
Civil Engineers
Civil Engineering is another really broad engineering field.
Civil Engineers work to build large structures and infrastructure like roads, airports, bridges and tunnels.
Civil Engineers help create and support the cities around us.
15
Civil Engineering
One of the oldest branches of engineering
People have been civil engineers since the beginning of civilizations when large structures and houses were first built.
The next slide shows a video all about a typical Civil Engineering job in the modern world.
16
17
Ancient Civil Engineering
Cichen Itza was a large city built by the Mayan people over 1,500 years ago. This image shows a popular temple ruin located in Chichen Itza.
The engineering and design of this structure was done so well that it is still standing today. Many people travel to see the ruins of Chichen Itza every year.
18
Multiple Choice
What historical event was most likely done by a civil engineer?
Designing of the Great Wall of China
Invention of the modern telephone
Navigation of the rivers across America
19
Multiple Choice
What does a Civil Engineer do?
Work on engines and motors.
Create new medicines and formulas.
Design and build structures and large infrastructure for cities.
Map out space travel possiblities
20
Aerospace Engineers
Aerospace engineers, or sometimes called aeronautic/astronautical engineers design machines and processes to learn more about space.
This field is new and developing as people become more interested in space and life beyond Earth. Click on the next slide to watch aerospace engineering interns work at SpaceX!
21
22
Aerospace Engineering
Working at SpaceX is one example of ways aerospace engineers find amazing careers
Many other aerospace engineers work for NASA or airplane companies like Boeing
These engineers are helping human life to move forwards and potentially, maybe one day, live on planets like Mars!
23
Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineers use the engineer process to develop new fuels, medicines, food, and many other products.
Watch the next slide to see an example of a chemical engineer at work.
24
25
Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineers make sure the products we use every day are safe and won't cause us harm.
Your laundry soap, toothpaste, sunscreen, and even your body wash or hair soap are all examples of chemical engineering that keep people healthy.
Chemical engineers also design new medicines and even vaccines to help people!
26
Open Ended
Try to name at least three things in your house that were created by chemical engineering:
27
Chemical Engineering Examples
Any processed food like chips, candies, protein bars, yogurts, sodas......the list is endless!
Any soaps or detergents
Medical supplies like Tylenol, insulin, antacids, anti-basterical creams, even mouthwash!
28
