How do you identify past tense in a sentence?

  • It always has a timeline expression

  • Yesterday

Past Simple Tense

  • A tense expressing an action that has happened or a state that previously existed.

  • Regular and Irregular verbs

Past Simple Tense (REGULAR VERBS)

  • +ed to the end of the root form of the verb

  • +d to the root form of the verb when the word ends with an "e"

  • +ied when the root form of the verb ends with a "y"

Past Simple Tense (IRREGULAR VERBS)

  • Unlike regular verbs, irregular verbs do not need to +ed/+d/+ied

  • Mostly, you have to CHANGE the spelling from the base word

  • Some of the irregular verbs however, DO NOT change their spelling at all to form the past tense
