All about Juneteenth

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is the holiday of celebrating African American's release from slavery. Slavery is the act of keeping somebody legally hostage to manage the plantation, do housework, and harvest the crops.

Problems with Slavery

  • Slaves were often mistreated in many forms.

  • Slaves were made to sleep in the Barn with the animals.

  • Slaves were discriminated because of the color of their skin.

Important People

There are a lot of people who helped African-Americans get to the stance that they are today in society. People who despise slavery and wanted to get rid of it were called abolitionists. Famous abolitionists include Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass as one of the big figures to get slavery abolished.

What is Juneteenth mean for younger

generations?

For younger generation such as ours, Juneteenth isn't about looking at our experiences in the past because we didn't experience them. Juneteenth for younger generations today means for us recognizing the path our ancestors took to get us to where we are today.
