Full-time work

  • Full-time work requires an employee to work, on average, 38 hours each week.

  • It is a permanent employment arrangement, or employment for a fixed term

  • Fixed term means that employment is based on a contract in which an employer hires an employee for a specific period of time.

Advantages of full-time work

  • Job security is higher in full-time jobs

  • Full-time employees are entitled to more paid benefits, like sick leave, holiday leave and superannuation entitlements

  • Full-time work makes it easier to earn a higher income, which makes it easier to support a family and to save.

Disadvantages of full-time work

  • There is not a lot of flexibility in fulll-time working hours

  • Full-time employees spend a lot of time at work, which can make work-life balance difficult

  • There is not as much free time for study and other interests

Advantages of Part-time work

  • Part-time workers have the same benefits as full-time workers (calculated pro rata based on the numer of hours worked)

  • A part-time usually has a regular pattern of work, with the same hours and days each week

  • More flexibility and time for family, study or other interests.

Disadvantages of Part-time work

  • Workers earn less money than full-time workers

  • It can be difficult to schedule meetings and projects around a part-time employee's roster

  • It can prevent opportunities for career advancement

Casual work

  • A working arrangement where an employee has no guaranteed working hours or expectation of continuing work.

  • Casuals are not part of the permanent workforce. Instead, they supply work on an irregular or flexible basis, often to meet a changing demand for work.

  • Casuals are not entitled to paid leave, including sick leave, annual leave, long service leave or parental leave.
