Let's recap on

context clues and signal words

3

What are context clues and signal words?

  • The words or phrases surrounding an unknown words provide pupils with clues

  • Synonyms, antonyms, examples, cause and effects, and general cues

  • Context clues often contain signal words which pupils can use to help them guess the meaning of new words

4

For example, read this sentence

  • Mr. Adam is affable. He reminds me of my kind brother who likes to help me when I have problem

  • So, what is the meaning of affable?

  • In the sentence, he said that Mr. Adam makes him remember his brother who is kind

  • So Mr. Adam who is affable = his brother who is kind

  • Affable = kind

  • Kind is the context clues (synonym) that helps you to guess the meaning of affable

5

Another example

  • I miss Mr. Adam. He is affable unlike our new class teacher who is grumpy and angry all the time.

  • In this sentence, he said that Mr. Adam is affable but his new class teacher is grumpy and angry

  • He use the word 'unlike' which means different or not the same (tidak sama)

  • Mr. Adam who is affable is not the same as the new class teacher who is grumpy and angry

  • Affable not the same as angry. Affable is the opposite of angry. So affable = kind

  • 'Unlike', 'grumpy and angry' are the context clues (antonym) to help you guess the meaning of affable
