Closing the Gap on the Trial - Networks and Hardware
2
General Feedback
It was a tricky paper!
Lots of people made similar mistakes
But fantastic effort from the vast majority!!
3
What are we going to do next?
Focus on the areas where you, as a group, performed weakest
Make sure we include more exam question practice
Build up your exam technique
4
Question 1 + 2 - Networks
Common issues: Exam Technique
5
Open Ended
What is a network? Imagine you're explaining the idea to a year 5 or 6 - use the simplest words you can!
6
Network
A network is one or more devices which are connected together in order to share resources.
7
Open Ended
Why do we have networks?
What is the point of them? What do they let us do?
8
Misconception 1 - What are the advantages of a LAN?
- almost everyone got this wrong -
9
LAN
A network in a small geographical area
Such as a school or office
(which uses only internally owned hardware)
10
The Question...
Doesn't mention WANs
Gives you some context about the company
Wants you to talk about a LAN compared to no network.
11
Multiple Select
What are the benefits to the bakery of using a LAN?
Easier to set up without a specialist
Cheaper and easier to use
Resources can be shared between computers
Less hardware needed as can share printers
Everyone can log on to every computer
12
Takeaways
Look at the number of marks - 4 marks for 2 advantages means two explanations too - why is your point an advantage?
Always be very clear what you are comparing - single phrases like 'cheaper', 'easier', 'more reliable' are not going to get marks without explanation
Read the question carefully - if you are talking about something which hasn't been mentioned (such as WANs), could you have misunderstood?
13
Open Ended
Louise works in an office where there are 7 stand-alone PCs.
She is considering installing a LAN.
Explain one advantage and one disadvantage of a LAN. [4]
14
Question 3 - Hardware
Common Issues: Mixing up registers & components

You have already done a lesson with Mr Wilkinson on this!
So I am just going to give you some quick questions!

Character Sets
27
What is a character set
Inside your computer, everything is stored in binary
So computers need a unified approach to storing LETTERS, SYMBOLS and NUMBERS as text
A character set defines how text is stored in a computer- which binary code equals which letter.
28
How many are there?
There are two you need to be aware of
ASCII and Unicode
29
ASCII
This is the simplest one
It uses 8 bits (1 byte) per character
Therefore, it can store...
30
Multiple Choice
How many different characters can ASCII represent using 8 bits?

31
Unicode
Unicode has several different varieties, and uses between 1 and 4 bytes per character
This allows it to represent many more characters
Such as different languages, and emojis
32
Multiple Select
Select the one benefit and one drawback of using Unicode instead of ASCII. [2]
Each character takes up more space
A wider variety of languages can be represented
It is easier for humans to understand
It is less efficient
