Conflict

• Rashad Butler is wrongly accused of stealing, and beaten by Paul Galluzzo. The store is frequently being robbed and the owner hires security to protect his shop. The combination of racially biased police officer in a pressure situation leads to an incident that brings light to a few different problems in the system. Jerry's is also the starting point of the protest at the end of the book.

• Quinn is torn between defending his friend's brother, Paul Galluzzo, and standing up for what he believes is right. Quinn was one of the only eye witnesses of the beating.
