Reaction with Oxygen

• metals react with O₂ and form metal oxide. metal oxides are basic in nature.

• Non- Metal react with O₂ and form non-metal oxide. Non- metal oxides are acidic in nature.

• Ex. Metal- 4Na + O₂ = 2 Na₂O ( NaOH)

• Ex. Non- metal S + O₂ = SO₂ ( H₂SO₄)

Reaction With Water

• Metals and metal oxides react with water to form metal hydroxide. these are basic in nature.

• Potassium and sodium are very reactive in water (cold). Mg does not react with cold water but reacts with hot water or steam.

• 2 Na + 2 H₂O = 2 NaOH + H₂

• Non metals do not react with water.

Reaction with acids

• Metals + acid = Metals salt + Hydrogen gas

• Zn + H₂SO₄ = ZnSO₄ + H₂

• Non metals do not react with acids

Reaction with Bases

• Metal + base = Metal salt + hydrogen gas

• Non metal reacts with base and form complex salts.
