became a master of local color in The Pickwick Papers. He is considered as England's best-loved novelist. His works include: Great Expectations, Hard Times, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities.

WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY (1811-1863)

disliked sham, hypocrisy, stupidity, false optimism, and self-seeking. The result was a satire on manners like Vanity Fair with its heroine, Becky Sharp.
