What is Distance Learning?

Distance education, also called distance learning, is the education of students who may not always be physically present at a school. The main elements of Distance Learning include physical separation of teachers and students during instruction and the use of various technologies to facilitate student-teacher and student-student communication.

Distance learning traditionally has focused on nontraditional students, such as full-time workers, military personnel, and nonresidents or individuals in remote regions who are unable to attend classroom lectures.

Traditionally, this usually involved correspondence courses wherein the student corresponded with the school via mail. Today, it usually involves online education. Online educational tools allow students and instructors to interact synchronously or asynchronously and give endless training opportunities with distance learning courses or hybrid courses.

With the idea of widening access to education, the educational policy of the country has emphasized the promotion of use of ICT in its distance education programs. 

ICT plays a significant role in distance education. It meets the requirements and expectations of the learners on a large scale which otherwise would not be possible using any traditional institutional system due to its limited resources.

ICT has various proven tools and technologies to meet the requirements of a learner at various phases of the learning cycle. For example: the admission phase, the learning phase, the evaluation phase and finally the certification phase as a service.
