Imperative Verbs: Definition

  • A type of sentences that gives advice or instructions or that expresses a request or command.

  • An imperative sentence typically begins with the base form of a verb, as in Go now! The implied subject you is said to be "understood" (You) go now! (See You Understood).

  • An imperative sentence ends with a period or an exclamation point.

Use the root form of the verb to create the imperative. Consider the examples below:

  • Give me that book!

  • Clean your room!

  • Do your homework.

  • Take the dog for a walk, please.

  • Don’t touch that!

  • Do come to visit us whenever you’re in town.
