What is a resource?

Anything that we can use.

E.g. oxygen, plants, timber, wool, plastic, concrete, coal etc.

Where do we get our resources from?

  • Lithosphere - land on Earth, the crust

  • Hydrosphere - all water on Earth

  • Atmosphere - all air in Earth's system

  • Biosphere - all living things on Earth

Natural and Synthetic Resources

  • Natural - used in their natural form, i.e. don't need to change them to use them

  • Synthetic - needs to be manufactured from natural resources

Renewable vs. Non-renewable Resources

  • Renewable - can never run out, or will be able to replace itself within a normal human lifespan

  • Non-renewable - can run out, or only places itself over a long period of times (i.e. millions of years)
