Pengertian
A suggestion or recommendation is another good way of giving advice that isn’t to direct.
Suggestion means a plan or idea or action put forward for consideration.
In this chapter, we are going to discuss about giving suggestions to do something or not to do something.
Giving suggestion to do something
We can use should, had better, ought to, let’s, why don’t you, etc.
Example : You should study hard from now. You will have an exam next month.
Giving suggestion not to do something
We can use shouldn’t and had better not.
Example : You should not go home late. Your parents will be angry.

3. Structure of giving suggestion
a.Giving suggestion with explanation
You should join the English course. You can get a good score in your next test
suggestion explanation/reason
b. Giving suggestion in dialogue
Ari : I always get bad score in English. Problem
Vera : Why don’t you join in English course ? The tutor will help you understand the lesson. Giving suggestion
Ari : You’re right. I’ll try it. Responses (accepting suggestion)

c. Using a Modal Verb
Giving suggestion can use modal verbs, such as should, ought to and could.
Example : You + Should + (Base form of verb) You should study harder.
d. Advising with a Stronger way
Using had better to suggest someone is stronger than using should
1). You + had better + (bare infinitive).You had better study harder before the
exam starts.
2). You + had better + not + (bare infinitive). You had better not eat sweets or you
will get toothache.

e. Using a Question
Giving suggestion can use questions, such as Why don’t you ….?, How about … ?, and What about ….. ?
1). Why don’t you + (bare infinitive) ? Why don’t you study harder ?
2). How about + (N/V-ing) ? How about joining a study group ?
f. Putting in the person’s position
1). If I were you, I + would + (bare infinitive). If I were you, I would study harder.
g. Other ways
1). I + suggest+ that (clause).
2). I suggest + (noun)
3). We + recommend + that (clause)
4). I + advise + that (clause)
