Nouns ending with -y

Nouns or objects that ends with the letter -y have certain rules to follow when you change the singular to plural form.

For singular nouns that end with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) before -y, we just add -s for the plural.

  • Example: Singular Plural

boy boys

However, if the nouns end with consonant (not a,e,i,o,u) before -y, we remove the -y and add -ies for the plural

  • Example: Singular Plural

 candy candies

3

Verbs ending with -y

Verbs or action words that ends with the letter -y also have certain rules to follow when you change to the third person singular.

If the verb ends with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) before -y, we just add -s for the third person singular.

  • Example: He / She / It plays

However, if the verb ends with consonant (not a,e,i,o,u) before -y, we remove the -y and add -ies for the plural

  • Example: He / She / It cries
