What is grammar?

  • The way we arrange words to make proper sentences.

We have already looked at parts of speech - nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions.

To end of today's lesson, I'm going to explain clauses to you!

{specifically main and dependent clauses}

28

What are clauses?

  • A group of words that contain a subject (the person or thing performing the action) and a verb (the doing word).

  • A sentence can have a main clause (it can stand alone and make sense) plus a dependent clause (depends on the other sentence to make sense).

  • We can use coordinating conjunctions to combine the two: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet

29

Examples:

>> Most newspapers have comic strips.

  • =MAIN CLAUSE

Most newspapers have comic strips and they make readers laugh.

=DEPENDENT CLAUSE

>> I rode the blue bike.

 =MAIN CLAUSE

I rode the green bike that Mary gave me for my birthday.

 =DEPENDENT CLAUSE

30

Practice:

Identify the main clause and the dependent clause in the following sentences:

1. Although it was raining, Maria went for a jog in the park.

2. The family moved into a temporary shelter after the flood.

3. Our neighbour drove us to school because the bus was late.

4. Jim studied in the sweet shop for his English test but it was hard to concentrate because of the noise.

5. After she picks me up, my mom is taking me out to buy new shoes.
