When does chemical change takes place?

Chemical change happens when the following are observed:

  • Formation of a New Product

  • Formation of Gas

  • Release or Absorption of Heat

  • Formation of Precipitate

8

Formation of a New Product

  • When a nail is exposed to oxygen and water, rust starts to form on its surface.

  • This situation shows oxidation, a chemical reaction that is aided by oxygen.

  • Once a new product is formed, the original material is unidentifiable.

9

Examples of formation of a new product

  • The change in color of apples when sliced open. This chemical reaction is also aided by oxygen. When apple is sliced open, the exposed part of the apples react with the oxygen in the air.

10

Examples of formation of a new product

  • The discoloration of copper coins or statues. Copper is a metal used for electrical wiring and cookware.

media

11

Examples of formation of a new product

  • Copper reacts to other materials in the surroundings and also in oxygen. When it reacts with these materials, a change in color of copper are observed. Its reaction with other elements and with oxygen may result to a pale green color, just like with the Statue of Liberty.

12

Formation of Gas

  • This evidence usually coincides with the formation of a new product.

  • Formation of gas indicates a change in composition.

13

Examples of Formation of Gas

When a material is burning, gas in the form of smoke is released together with the formation of ashes. Observe how gas is formed when the candle melts.

media

14

Examples of Formation of Gas

This is evident in fireworks where the firecracker powder reacts with fire (oxygen), forming gases mixed in the smoke and producing light in the process.

15

Examples of Formation of Gas

This is also observed when baking soda and vinegar is mixed. The mixture of these two materials produce the gas carbon dioxide which is commonly used as a home experiment. The balloon in the picture below grows gets filled with gas from the reaction of baking soda and vinegar.

16

Examples of Formation of Gas

Photosynthesis is the process of food making in plants. They use carbon dioxide, the air we exhale, water, and sunlight to produce sugar and oxygen. Photosynthesis is one of the most essential chemical reactions in nature that keeps life on Earth thriving.

17

Release or Absorption of Heat

There are some instances wherein chemical change results to the sudden heating or cooling of material that underwent chemical change.

media

18

Example of the Release of Heat

When a metal is soaked in an acid, heat is released as the metal starts to corrode or wear away due to the acid’s strength.

19

Formation of a Precipitate

Aside from the foul odor that a milk releases when it spoils, solid particles also form at the bottom of the container.

Formation of a Precipitate

Cheese are formed from spoiled milk
