6
So much for vocabulary.
Did you notice the words "el" and "la" in front of the nouns? These 2 words are Spanish words for "the". The reason is htat ALL Spanish nouns , unlike English nouns, have GENDER. Nouns are either MASCULINE or FEMENINE.
~ "el" is used for masculine nouns (in singular)
~ "la" is used for femenine nouns (in singular)
In Spanish Neutrals do not exist. EVERYTHING is male or female, including items.
7
How do we tell which words are masculine and wich words are femenine in the Spanish Language?
Look at thei two groups pf nouns:
El muchacho / El libro / El sombrero
La muchacha / La pluma / La casa
In what letter od the words in the first group end? What about the second group? So what do you think the rule is?
With nouns that end in other letters (el tigre, la leche), THere is no way of determining whether we use "el" or "la". This is why we need to learn the article when you learn each new word.
8
When the NOUN ends in -o, the word for "the" is "el"
When the noun ends in -a, the word for "the is "la"
Like everything, there are a few exceptions. For example.
Mano end in -o but in is feminine (La mano)
Mapa ends in -a but it is masculine (El mapa)
Now is your turn, Add the appropiate articel (word for "the") ---->
_____ escuela _______ teatro
_____ banco ________ fiesta
