Acids, Bases and Salts_ Part 2
by Utkersh Bora
2
How does a metal react with an acid?
Acids react with most metals to form hydrogen gas and salt. Nevertheless, not all metals react in the same way to acids. When an acid reacts with metal, salt and hydrogen gas are produced.
Metal + Acid → Hydrogen + Salt
3
Multiple Choice
What happens when zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid ?
Zinc Chloride and Hydrogen gas is evolved.
Zinc Hydroxide and Chlorine gas is evolved.
Zinc Hydride and Hydrogen gas is evolved.
None of the above.
4
Multiple Choice
The reaction of metal with acid results in the formation of:
Only hydrogen gas
Only salt
Both salt and hydrogen gas
None of these
5
Multiple Choice
When magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid it produces
magnesium chloride
magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas
magnesium, chlorine and hydrogen gas
None of the above
6
Multiple Choice
A piece of aluminum foil is dropped in dil. hydrochloric acid in a test tube. On bringing a burning match stick near the mouth of the test tube, a pop sound occurs. What is the gas evolved?
O2
CO2
Cl2
H2
7
. How does a metal react with a base?
When a base reacts with a metal, hydrogen gas is produced. It burns with a pop sound when a burning candle is brought near the test tube’s mouth.
Metal + Base → Hydrogen + Salt
Example: Zn (s) + 2NaOH (aq)→ Na2ZnO2 (aq) + H2 (g)
8
Multiple Choice
A piece of aluminum foil is dropped in dil. sodium hydroxide in a test tube. On bringing a burning match stick near the mouth of the test tube, again a pop sound occurs. The products formed in process are :
AlCl3 + H2
NaCl + H2
NaAlO2 + H2
None of these
9
Multiple Choice
Why should curd and sour substances not be kept in brass and copper vessels?
The metal reacts with the acids in Curd to liberate hydrogen gas and harmful products
The metal reacts with the bases in Curd to liberate hydrogen gas and harmful products
The metal reacts with Curd and causes an explosion.
None of the above.
10
