US History

History of the U.S.A.- COLONIZATION
Earliest inhabitants of North America were the Native Americans. There were dozens of different groups that had different ways of life using available local resources.
Europeans started coming to this area in the 1500’s. They wanted to claim the land to use its natural resources and increase trade.
Spanish came in the 1500s and built outpost.
Founded St. Augustine, Florida in 1565
By the 1700s they settled parts of New Mexico, California and Texas
French came in the 1600s, and claimed a vast stretch of land from eastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
They traded furs with the Native Americans
Later on the French built settlements; such as, New Orleans

First settled Jamestown, Virginia in 1607
Plymouth, Massachusetts followed in 1620
Eventually there were 13 colonies formed in what is now the USA.

Westward Expansion began in the early 1800s
In 1803, Thomas Jefferson DOUBLED the size of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase
Soon after Jefferson commissioned Lewis and Clarkto explore the newly acquired Territory. They were to map their journey, and record data about the plants and animals they found.
The USA also gained Florida from Spain and part of the Oregon Territory from Britain.
In 1845, the United States annexed Texas. This angered Mexico and led to war. The USA won the war the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gave the USA California and most of the western states between Texas and the Pacific Ocean.

Civil War
People in the northern states and southern states disagreed over the issues of slavery and states’ rights.
When Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, 11 Southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America.
The Civil War began in 1861. It lasted for 4 years, and over 600,000 Americans died.
The North won, and the country was reunited. Slavery was abolished and millions of African Americans were freed.

People began moving from rural farms to urban cities. As machines replaced work done by hand, farmers were left without work and moved to the cities.
The Great Migration was the migration of African Americans from the south in search of better paying jobs in the north after the civil war.

World War I and World War II
World War I began in Europe in 1914. The United States tried to remain neutral, but joined the Allied Powers whenGermany sank an American ship. Germany surrendered in 1918.
World War II broke out in Europe in 1939. Adolf Hitler, German leader, wanted to create an empire in Europe, Japan wanted an empire in eastern Asia.
The United States entered the war when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

In August 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Japan.
At the end of the war nearly 55 million people had died world wide.

Cold War
After WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union became the world’s two major powers.
The United States and Russia competed for leadership in the world in what became known as the “Cold War,” because no actual fighting every occurred.
The Cold War lasted until the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991.

Civil Rights Movement
Following the Civil War, African Americans were freed from slavery, but did not have equal rights as their white neighbors. In the 1960s a Civil Rights movement began to fight for all citizens to have the same basic rights.
In the mid 1960s, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act were passed - outlawing racial segregation in public schools and allowing African Americans the right to vote.
