DRP - Lesson 4

Day 1

If you've ever tried to break a bad habit, such as nail biting or cracking your knuckles, you probably know how difficult it can be. Studies have shown that it takes about 21 days of trying in order to rid your life of an unhelpful behavior. It also takes that long to make a positive habit part of your life. Have you ever tried to form a good habit? How about trying to remember to floss your teeth daily? Flossing your teeth is beneficial in so many ways that the results outweigh the effort and time it takes to do every day.

3

Day 1 (cont.)

Dental floss was first invented in 1815 by New Orleans dentist Levi Spear Parmly. It was first made out of thin silk thread. Today there are many kinds and sizes of dental floss to choose from. Some varities even come in waxed, flavored, and shred resistant. There is even a tool called a flosser that makes flossing very easy to perform.

4

Day 1 (cont.)

But why is flossing important? Daily flossing gives you better breath, a decreased risk of gum disease, and less tooth decay. About 40 percent of the surfaces of your teeth never get cleaned if you don't floss. A substance called plaque that accumulates and hardens between your teeth can lead to decay and periodontal disease. Studies have found that people with gum disease are one to two times more likely to have a heart attack and three times more likely to suffer a stroke.

So why not give it a try? It takes only minutes to form this valuable habit. What do you have to lose? Certainly not your teeth!
