Review the Key Terms from 1.4.1 Study Guide:
American Indians: People (in the past or present) whose ancestors have lived for a long time in the land that is now the United States.
Americas: All the land in North America, Central America, and South America, as well as the islands in the Caribbean.
Ancestral Puebloan culture: An American Indian civilization in what is now the southwestern United States. The Ancestral Puebloan peoples built complex stone houses and used river water to grow crops in the desert.
cultural region: An area where people have similar ways of living and traditions.

hunter-gatherers: People who live by hunting, fishing, and collecting wild plants.
indigenous: Native to a particular region. This word is most often used to describe people whose ancestors have lived in an area for a very long time.
Mesoamerica: The region that is now Mexico and Central America.
Mississippian culture: (about 800 CE – about 1300 CE) An American Indian civilization in what is now the southeastern United States. The Mississippian peoples established large towns and grew many crops.
nomadic: Not settled in one place. Nomadic people move around to follow sources of food.
