Review the Key Terms from 1.5.1 Study Guide:

Age of Exploration: (1400 – 1700) A period during which Europeans explored many of the world's oceans and continents.

colony: A region that is taken over and controlled by a distant country, which sends groups of its people to live there.

colonize: To take control of another part of the world and send people to live there. From the 15th through the 20th centuries, European countries colonized much of Africa and the Americas.

Dutch Republic: (1581 – 1795) A country along the northern coast of Europe. Today, the country is called the Netherlands.

​indentured servant: A person who agreed to work for someone else for a certain period of time without pay. In early America, indentured servants usually worked to pay back the money their employers spent to bring them to America.

Middle Passage: The boat trip to the Americas that Africans were forced to take when they were sold as slaves.

slavery: A system in which some people are owned by other people and forced to work for them. In the United States, slavery lasted from the colonial period until 1865. Almost all enslaved people in the United States were people of African descent.

triangular trade: A system of trade among Europe, Africa, and the Americas from the 16th through the 19th centuries. In this system, goods were shipped from Europe to Africa and exchanged for slaves. Slaves were shipped across the Atlantic and exchanged for raw materials and goods made in the colonies, which were shipped back to Europe.
