Dear God,
I always talk to you when I pray,
And have you watched me when I study,
I want you to use me in a special way,
And make my life shine everyday.
Thank you Jesus for listening to me,
Bless my teacher my classmates and me,
As we study English today,
And one more thing I like to say,
I love you Jesus more each day.
AMEN!

- Verbs have tense.
Tense is the time expressed by a verb. Past tense means the action has already taken place.
Time markers used are the following words: yesterday, last night, a few minutes ago etc.
14
- Yesterday I was working on the website. (Yesterday is a time adverb)
- I went to the hospital last week.
15
The simple past and past perfect tenses are both used to refer to actions which have already occurred in the past.
The simple past tense is used to express action or state of being that happened at some definite past time while the past perfect tense expresses an action that was completed before another past action. It also shows an action that occurred for a period of time in the past.

What is Past Perfect Tense?
The past perfect tense, or the pluperfect tense, indicates that a past action was completed before another past action. The past perfect tense must be used only if this act occurred before another action in the past.
The past perfect tense signifies a completed action in the past. The use of the past perfect tense clarifies a lot of ambiguity about the order of events. The past perfect tense shows that one action happened before another action in the past.
Sometimes adverbs, such as before, after, already, and yet accompany the past perfect tense.
The simple past tense, in contrast, shows that one action happened in the past at a certain point in time.
20
Past Tense vs. Past Perfect Tense
The past tense, or simple past tense, is used when referring to an action that happened at a specific moment in the past.
I went grocery shopping last week.
Went is the past tense of the verb to go. Last week is the point in the past when the action of the verb to go happened.
The past perfect tense is used to show that one action happened earlier than another action in the past.
It had snowed two inches when I looked out the window.
In this example, there are two actions in the past: the action of the verb to snow and the action of the verb to look. Since to snow is in the past perfect (had snowed), it is clear that it first snowed, and then I looked out the window.
If there is no other explicit or implicit action in the past, the use of the past perfect tense is not meaningful.
I had eaten my lunch.
The reader of this sentence will be expecting another past action following the verb to eat.
21
There are several situations where the past perfect tense can be used. It is appropriate to use in the following ways.
1. To show that an action happened before something else in the past:
She stayed up all night because she had suffered insomnia.
2. To show that an action happened before a specific time in the past:
She had transferred residence before 2018.
3. Conditional perfect is used for something that might have happened in the past.
If Karen had trained harder, she would have won the marathon.
22
4. Reported speech is when we talk about what somebody else said.
She said that she had taken English lessons before.
5. Show dissatisfaction with the past.
Sharon wished she had returned the package.
