In the preterite, verbs that end in -car, -gar -zar have a spell change ONLY in the YO form.
In these cases, the "yo" forms will end as follows:
buscar ---- busqué
llegar ---- llegué
rezar ----- recé

Yo busqué mis libros en mi taquilla, pero no los encontré.
Yo llegué tarde a la reunión con el Sr. Santiago.
Yo recé en la clase de español esta mañana.

In the rest of the forms, there is no spelling change:
Mi perro buscó su juguete pero no lo encontró.

-i- to -y-
There are some verbs in Spanish that in the "él/ella/Ud." and the "ellos/ ellas / Uds." forms are going to change -i- with -y-. We can identify these verbs because they have two vowels together:
Creer, leer: creí, creíste, creyó, creímos, creísteis, creyeron
Caer: caí, caíste, cayó, caímos, caísteis, cayeron
Oír: oí, oíste, oyó, oímos, oísteis, oyeron

Yo leí muchos libros el verano pasado pero mi hermano no leyó nada.
Tú creíste a María, pero Jorge y Antonio no la creyeron.
Nosotros oímos al perro ladrando, pero mis padres no lo oyeron.
