Douglass: Overview

Fredrick Douglass was a boy born into slavery on February in 1818. In Talbolt County, Maryland. Douglass was only 12 years old when he realized he wanted to learn to read and write. He was taught to do this (read and write) from his mistress/his owner's wife (Mrs. Auld). When the husband found out that Douglass was being taught by his wife he grew very angry and forbid her from teaching him anything else however, this did not stop Douglass it motivated and encouraged him. While he would run errands he would find ways to read by getting books from the poor white kids in the city of Baltimore.

How did Douglass Learn to Read/Write ?

Since Douglass's mistress was no longer able to teach him he sought out to find someone who could. Douglass was on his daily errands when he saw two black girls that were also slaves. He could tell they were slaves because of the wepts they had on their bodies. The first girl he saw was Henrietta and she was about 22 and the second girl was Mary, she was 14. Their owners names were The Hugh's which is how Douglass learned more from the wife, Mrs. Hugh she was a sweet woman when she wanted to be. She soon became the most hated woman because of her cruel punishments.

7

Cont.

All slave owners knew not to leave Douglass by himself because they knew he would be reading something and they hated this because of the quote used by all owners "If you give a slave an inch he'll take an ell" or " The only thing a black person should know how to do is be a slave". Douglass would however get books from the white neighbor hood kids a book in exchange for bread or "Bread for Bread of Knowledge" as Douglass would say. His favorite book "The Columbian Orator" this book is also where he got the idea of escaping from and the first time he heard the words Abolition and abolitionists now this word he NEEDED to find out what it meant by all owners "If you give a slave an inch he'll take an ell" or " The only thing a black person should know how to do is be a slave". Douglass would however get books from the white neighbor hood kids a book in exchange for bread or "Bread for Bread of Knowledge" as Douglass would say.
