2
What is Friction
the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
You can have static friction and kinetic friction
3
Static Friction
Static friction can prevent an object from sliding down a sloped surface.
The coefficient of static friction, typically denoted as μs, is usually higher than the coefficient of kinetic friction.
note the equation in green
4
Kinetic Friction
Kinetic friction is defined as a force that acts between moving surfaces.
A body moving on the surface experiences a force in the opposite direction of its movement.
note the equation in green

Finding Friction using the Normal [Real] force
When a system is balanced the Normal force and Gravity Force are equal
When a system is balanced the Friction and applied force are equal
A balanced system means that the object is at rest, or moving at a constant velocity [no acceleration]
13
Multiple Choice
When looking at friction problems, if the net force in the x-direction on an object is zero, what can we say about its acceleration?
it is positive
it is negative
it is zero
not enough information is given
14
Multiple Choice
Normal force is
