Science - Types of Precipitation Day 2
SC.5.E.7.4: Distinguish among the various forms of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, and hail), making connections to the weather in a particular place and time.
TODAY’S TARGET: Recognize that precipitation is one factor that determines the weather in a particular place and time.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve is a grassland in central Florida. During the summer, thunderstorms are very common. One very violent storm caused a small tornado. Before the tornado blew through, coin‐sized balls of ice fell from the clouds. What form of precipitation was this?
rain
snow
sleet
hail
3
Precipitation AFFECTS Weather
I. Weather is what is happening in the atmosphere at a particular time and place.
The atmosphere is the blanket of air that surrounds the surface of the Earth, and rises to about 60 miles above the ground.
When you look outside your classroom window on a Monday morning at 9:00, you are looking at a particular time and place. Someone else at a different school might be looking out their classroom window at 9:00 on the same Monday morning, but they are in a different place. The weather there might be different.

Multiple Choice
The ____________ is the blanket of air that surrounds the surface of the Earth
precipitation

II. Weather includes all of the things that are happening in the atmosphere.
sunny or cloudy
warm or cold
windy or not
humid or dry
III. One condition that affects the weather is precipitation.
Precipitation is water that falls from the sky.
The water that forms precipitation comes from a cloud.
The air temperature will determine what kind of precipitation will fall
rain, snow, sleet and hail.

Rain is common in Florida: in fact, Florida’s seasons are defined as the rainy season and the dry season. Large amounts of rain fall in the summer, and in the winter rain is rare. By April and May, many places in Florida are very dry. This makes it a challenge for plants and animals to survive in this climate. During the summer, rains are heavy, and many places are flooded, such as marshes and swaps. In the dry season, these same places have no water at all.
10
IV. Hail forms when raindrops begin to fall inside a thunderstorm, but are blown back up into the cloud by heavy winds.
falls in Florida
solid drops of ice then fall from the cloud
If the raindrops rise high enough, the temperature can be cold enough to freeze them
hailstones can be blown back up into the cloud several times, making them larger and larger
falling hailstones can be dangerous and cause injury and damage
only falls during a very violent thunderstorm

V. Sleet occurs when falling rain falls through a layer of freezing air that causes the liquid raindrops to turn to ice.
Sleet does not often fall in Florida.
VI. Snow forms as a solid and stays solid all the way to the ground.
Snow only falls when air temperatures are below thirty‐two degrees. Snow is rare in Florida.
