Rule: Use commas to separate:

  • two or more adjectives describing the same noun 

  • three or more items in a series. 

Ex: He gave a long, prepared speech.

Ex: We wondered what ethnic foods are available, where we can buy them, and how to prepare them.

RULE: Put a comma in between the day of the month and the year. 

TIP: Do not use a comma if only the month and year are given.

Ex:   We began that job on June 5, 2012.
