Weather Patterns and Predictions

by Ashley Roe-Jones

2

Standard/Learning Target

SES5.c Construct an argument that predicts weather patterns based on interactions among ocean currents, air masses, and topography.

  • I can identify patterns in ocean currents, air masses, and topography. (Knowledge)

  • I can explain weather patterns based on interactions among ocean currents, air masses, and topography. (Reasoning)

Let's Review...

Air Mass

Fronts

4

Multiple Choice

A front is
1
where warm air is cooling at earth's surface
2
a line where hot and cold air are separating
3
a line where two different air masses meet
4
where cold air is rising and forming rain clouds

5

Multiple Choice

4. An air mass is...
1
A body of air with the same temperature and moisture throughout.
2
a body of air that produces rain
3
A body  of evaporated water
4
the weight of air

6

Multiple Choice

A cold front usually brings what kind of weather?
1
snow
2
sunny and fair
3
rain and/or thunderstorms
4
 cool and dry

7

Multiple Choice

When a cold front or a warm front stays in place for several days without invading another front, it is called a ______.
1
stationary front
2
 cold front
3
occluded front
4
warm front

8

Multiple Choice

How do we name air masses?
1
Water and temperature
2
Air pressure
3
moisture and temperature
4
Cold and warm

9

Multiple Choice

6. Air masses develop because the Earth is heated unevenly.
1
True
2
False

These factors also affect weather...

Air Pressure

Air Pressure, Barometric pressure, is the measure of the force exerted in all directions by the air.

It is directly affected by the density of the air.

Two factors that affect air density:

TEMPERATURE

MOISTURE (Humidity)

11

Open Ended

How do you think temperature and humidity affect air pressure?

12

Air Pressure and Density

More Dense=Greater Pressure

Less Dense=Less Pressure

Warm Air=Less Dense

Cool Air=More Dense

Dry Air=More Dense

Moist (Humid) Air=Less Dense

13

Multiple Choice

What happens to air pressure as you move upward into the atmosphere?
1
increases
2
decreases
3
stays the same

14

Multiple Choice

In what direction(s) does air exert pressure?
1
everywhere
2
no where
3
there is no pressure
4
downward

15

Multiple Choice

Which weather condition will most likely occur when the atmospheric pressure in an area begins falling?
1
dry
2
cold
3
rainy
4
sunny

16

Multiple Choice

Which kind of weather change will occur with an increase in air pressure?
1
cooler and dryer
2
colder and rainier
3
hotter and stormier
4
warmer and moister

17

Multiple Choice

Fewer molecules further apart, means density is:
1
high
2
low

18

Air Pressure and Winds

When the temperature changes, it causes a difference in pressure. This forces dense cool air (over water) to sink and move along the ground. When that happens it pushes the warmer air upward.

Air moves from a region of high pressure (cool air over water) to low pressure (warm air over land).

Changes in air pressure also cause changes in weather conditions .

19

Topographic Map

Topographic Maps are marked with contured lines...ISOBARS.

The Isobars are used to depict air pressure.

H represents highest pressure (cool, dry)

L represents lowest pressure (warm, humid)

Remember!!!

Air moves from a region of high pressure (cool air over water) to low pressure (warm air over land).

21

Multiple Choice

Low pressure will usually bring what kind of weather?
1
Sunny
2
Calm
3
Stormy

22

Multiple Choice

High pressure will usually bring what kind of weather?
1
clear and dry
2
cloudy and wet

23

Multiple Choice

Which is the best indicator that precipitation is on the way?
1
low pressure
2
low humidity
3
low temperature
