The perfect tense

When talking about what you did in the past in German, we usually use the perfect tense. It literally translates as "I have played/eaten/stayed", etc.

In English, we would say either I ate or I have eaten, but in German we would use the "I have eaten" form.

The other key thing to remember in German is to use the verb "haben" when there is no movement, and "sein" when there is movement.

E.g. "ich habe gegessen" (I ate/I have eaten) - no movement

"ich bin nach Schottland gefahren (I went to Scotland) - movement
