How does a rainbow form?
12
13
How is the rainbow formed?
Rainbows are created by the dispersion of sunlight by raindrops. Red light arrives at the eye of the observer from the upper drop while violet light arrives from the lower drop. Other raindrops yield the other colors produce a continuous arc in the sky.

Photonics Engineer
Photonics is the science of using light to generate energy and detect or transmit information.
Photonics engineering aims to develop innovative and new products for telecommunication, manufacturing, medicine and construction.

Splitting light
You can see the colours of the rainbow for your self by sending a ray of white light into a glass of prism.
A prism is a triangular glass box
When the light enters the prism it bends-it is refracted. It also bends as it leaves the prism.
20
21
Splitting light
The white light split up into a spectrum of colours. Same colours as you see in the rainbow.
The splitting up of white light into separate colours is called dispersion
22
Dispersion
This happens because of refraction. When white light enters a block of glass, some colours bend more than the others. Violet bends the most, red the least.
23
24
Multiple Choice
Which colour is refracted most as it passes through the prism?
red
orange
violet
blue
25
Multiple Choice
Which colour of light is refracted more by prism?
green
blue
26
Multiple Choice
Which colour is refracted least as it passes through the prism?
red
orange
violet
blue
27
Multiple Choice
What is the transparent material that causes this?
spectrum
splitting light
water(raindrop)
28
Multiple Choice
What is disperse means?
spread
bend
bounce back
29
Multiple Choice
How many components of white light?

Multiple Choice
The breaking up of white light into its component .
Based on the statement given, name the process that takes place in the white light.
Dispersion
Reflection
Refraction
Scattering
31
Multiple Choice
Why is red light is at the top while violet at the bottom of the spectrum?
Red light has the slowest speed so it is refracted the least
Red light has the highest speed so it is refracted the least.
Violet light has the highest speed so it is refracted the least
32
Multiple Choice
What will happen if a second inverted prism is placed behind the first prism?
double rainbows form
a white light forms
the lights of spectrum will be in reverse
33
Multiple Choice
This is the example of dispersion of light
sky looks bright orange in the evening
shadow
Pool seems shallower
rainbow

Multiple Select
What is this ?
Rainbow
Rain
Sun
Cloud
35
Multiple Choice
How many colors are in the rainbow ?
36
Multiple Choice
What are the rainbow colors ?
37
Multiple Choice
can we see rainbow at night?
38
Multiple Choice
We cannot see rainbow in the night because there is no
wind
light
heat
electric
39
Multiple Choice
Why is red light is at the top whileviolet at the bottom of the spectrum?
Violet light has the medium speed so it is refracted the least.
Violet light has the highest speed so it is refracted the least
Red light has the slowest speed so it is refracted the least
Red light has the highest speed so it is refracted the least.
40
Multiple Choice
Why is the spectrum of light seperated into its components of colour when white light is directed to a prism?
The different colours in the white light bend away from the normal line at different angles when entering prism
The different colours in the white light bend towards the normal line at different angles when entering prism
The different colours in the white light bend away from the normal at same speed to each other when entering prism
The different colours in the white light bend towards the normal at same speed to each other when entering prism
