(a Democrat) won the popular vote to become president, but lost a disputed electoral vote to Rutherford B. Hayes

(a Republican).

​nUnder the Compromise of 1877, the Democrats in Congress agreed to the election of Hayes as president . . .

​. . . and the Republicans in Congress promised to withdraw federal troops from the South, which ended Reconstruction in 1877.
