Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC):

Identify the specialized structures of terrestrial and aquatic plants. S4LT-IIe-f-9

3

Plants can be found all around us. We can find them on land, in water, and even on other plants. Like animals, plants live in different environments. They have different characteristics that help them adapt to their specific environment.

Specialized Structures of Terrestrial and Aquatic Plants

Plants grow everywhere. They cover the Earth’s surface. Like animals, there are terrestrial and aquatic plants.

Plants have specialized parts that help them survive in their habitats. Their survival is also affected by certain conditions in the environment.

Plants have three basic parts, the leaves, stem, and roots. Others bear flowers while others do not.

Plants that grow on land are called terrestrial plants. Some terrestrial plants are small, others are big. There are plants with big trunks (woody stem) while others have soft stem. There are plants that need plenty of water to grow, while others need very little water in order to survive.

Terrestrial plants grow in different places. There are plants that grow directly on soil while others grow on rocks. Other plants cling to a fence. Some climb up a tree.

25

Their leaves have tiny holes called stomata, through which they breathe air. Since terrestrial plants have an abundant source of air, their stomata can be found on the bottom of their leaves. Terrestrial plants also have a pronounced vascular system known as stems. Stems hold up the body structure of a plant.

All plants have roots, stem and leaves. Many also have flowers which will develop into seeds.

26

Unlike terrestrial plants, aquatic plants have little or no stems. Roots are smaller, thinner, and are used mostly for anchorage. Floating aquatic plants have stomata on top of their leaves so they can access air.

Aquatic plants are plants that have adapted to living within aquatic environments. They are also referred to as hydrophytes. These plants require special adaptations for living submerged in water or at the water’s surface.

Aquatic plants can only grow in water or in soil that is permanently saturated with water. The leaves, stem and roots of aquatic plants grow underwater. In some, the leaves float on water. Their flowers are raised above the water surface. Aquatic plants have specialized structures that allow them to live under the water. Others have specialized structures to make them float on the surface of water.
