​Standard 8.6A: students will be able to explain how the Northwest Ordinance established principles and procedures for the orderly expansion of the United States

​The Northwest Territory

• ​The Northwest Territory is the area west of the Appalachian Mountains.

• ​This territory was given to the United States from Britain as part of their victory in the Revolutionary War

• ​This territory would eventually be the states of Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio

• ​Before they became states, there was a couple of requirements they needed to meet first.

​The Land Ordinance 1785

• ​The Land Ordinance set up a system for dividing up the Northwest Territory.

• ​each territory was split into Townships

  • ​townships were 36 lots of 640 acres each

​Northwest Ordinance of 1787

• ​Created a political system for the Northwest Territory

• ​Created a system for how to bring new states into the United States.

  • ​1st - Congress created several smaller territories and appointed a Governor for each Territory

  • 2nd - When the population of a territory reached 60,000 its settlers could draft their own constitution (laws), and ask to join the U.S.

  • ​3rd - prohibited slavery in the Northwest Territory
