Review Earth &
Atmosphere Layers
2
Today, I will review the Earth & Atmosphere layers and prepare for my Quiz tomorrow.
3
EARTH COMPOSITION
The Earth is divided into three layers- the crust, the mantle, and the core.
The less dense compounds make up the crust and the mantle.
The more dense compounds make up the core.
4
5
THE CRUST
The crust is the outermost layer and the thinnest
There are two types of crust: continental and oceanic.
6
THE MANTLE
The layer of the Earth between the crust and the core.
The mantle is much thicker than the crust and contains most of the Earth’s mass (84%)
7
UPPER MANTLE
The Lithosphere: This is where tectonic plates are found
The Asthenosphere: Plastic / Silly putty like part of the mantle that the lithosphere sits on.
Convection currents in the mantle cause movement. Movement of the asthenosphere moves tectonic plates.
8
LAYERS WITH THE UPPER MANTLE
9
THE CORE
The Outer Core: The liquid layer of the Earth’s core and surrounds the inner core.
The Inner Core: The solid, dense center of our planet.
10
Multiple Choice
The crust and the mantle are less dense than the core.
True
False
11
Multiple Choice

What causes movement on the Asthenosphere?
Convenction Currents
The Inner Core
Earthquakes
Water
14
Multiple Choice
The Inner Core is
Liquid
Solid
Gas
Plasma
15
LAYERS OF ATMOSPHERE
16
17
Troposphere
the layer of the atmosphere closest to the earth, in which the air moves in all directions.
It is where most of Earth's weather takes place.
18
Stratosphere
The layer of the Earth's atmosphere that lies above the troposphere. It has very little water vapor and other gases present.
OZONE LAYER forms here.
19
Mesosphere
The part of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and thermosphere in which the temperature decreases in altitude.
20
Thermosphere
The highest level of the atmosphere
21
Ionosphere
Very active part of the atmosphere.
It grows and shrinks depending on the energy it absorbs from the Sun.
Auroras, Northern Lights occur in the ionosphere.
22
Exosphere
The outer region of the atmosphere.
Satellites orbit earth in the exosphere
23
24
Multiple Choice
The order of the layers of the atmosphere are:
thermosphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, troposphere, exosphere
stratosphere, troposphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere
troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermospehere, exosphere
25
Multiple Choice
