On the Trail of Earlier People

People of the stone age were good artists. Many cave paintings have been found in the cave dwellings of the stone age. These paintings were created on ceremonies special rituals or by hunters before they went for hunting.

Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age:
During this age human adopted different techniques for hunting, fishing and gathering food.

Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age:
Human of this age developed small, sharp, pointed stone tools called microliths
Canoes were made for the first time during this period, which implies that men could hunt as well as fish.

Neolithic or New Stone Age:
This age began with the beginning of the farming and until of the metal. The beginning of farming marked the beginning of progress towards a settled life.

Neolithic or New Stone Age:
Animals like sheep and cow were domesticated widely. They gave a supply of meat, leather, bone and milk. This led to the development of settlements.

After the beginning of settled life, communities became bigger and eventually took the form of villages. This was the period when another major discovery took place , the invention of the wheels which gave them many benefits to human begins. they also developed crafts like weaving and pottery .

We describe people who lived in subcontinents as early as two million years ago as hunter- gatherers

They are hunter and gatherer because they used to hunt animals and gather fruits and other plant produce for food.

The early people did not live at one place; they used to move from one place to another. This means that early people lived a nomadic life

Why the early people live a nomadic life?
The early people did not know the knowledge of farming and agriculture .Food sources at a particular place were exhausted after some time. They were forced to move in search of a better place

How do we know about these people?
We know about them from their evidence in the form of stone tools and weapons. The main objects used by early humans was stone , hence, this period is called the Stone Age

Anthropologists have divided the stone Age into three different phases:
1.Paleolithic ( Old Stone Age)
2. Mesolithic ( Middle Stone Age)
3. Neolithic (New Stone Age)

1. Paleolithic ( Old Stone Age)
This phase began around 500,000 BC and ended around 10,000 BC. The tools were crude and hand no refinement. The most common tool of this age was the hand axe, which was used for chopping trees and hunting animals.

During this age , many parts of the earth were covered heavily with ice and climate was cold. Geologists define this cold period as the Ice Age.

Early humans did not live in houses. They used to live in caves and under rocks.

With passing the time , early humans learnt to light fire. The discovery of fire was a major revolution for human beings.
