This tense is used to describe an action which had already ​been completed before the occurence of another action in the past.

Formation:

Pronom sujet + être /avoir imparfait + past participle of the main verb

​To identify the correct tense in the past:

​Passé composé: It is used to indicate events that have a fixed beginning and ending in the past.

​Imparfait: It is used for actions which don't have definite beginning or end, but happened over a course of time in the past.

​Plus-que-parfait: It is used to indicate an action that occurred earlier, further back in the past.
