It makes reference to the biblical episode-three magician-kings came from the East to present their honors to the born child Jesus in Bethlehem.

In Argentina, Uruguay y Paraguay kids leave a shoe for gifts, and also put grass and water for the camels on January 6th.
Peruvian people have an event known as the Bajada de los Reyes (Descent Of The Kings) to give gifts.

While in Puerto Rico, families still sing carols dedicated to the Magi.
And finally in Spain, people also prepare El Roscón or the Kings' cake and a very popular and special lottery/lotería is held on January 6th known as the Lottery of the Baby, referring Jesus.
