Factor Combinations

  • Factors are numbers that you use to multiply to get the required number. In the equation, 3 x 2 = 6, the factors of 6 are 3 and 2.

Composite Numbers - Some numbers have more than 2 factor combinations like 9. The combinations to multiply to get 9 are 1 x 9 and 3 x 3. Numbers that have more than just the factor combination 1 and itself are called composite numbers.

  • Prime Numbers - 2 is a prime number because the only factor combination it has is 1 x 2. Numbers that have only one combination of factors - 1 and itself - are called prime numbers.
