Pressure Systems

HIGH pressure

  • Cold Air Mass / Cold Front

  • Cooler temperature

    • This doesn't necessarily mean it is cold out, just cooler than it could be.

  • Clear Skies / Fair Skies

    • No Clouds / maybe Cirrus Clouds

  • Heavy / Dense Air

LOW Pressure

  • Warm Air Mass / Warm Front

  • Warmer Temperature

  • Some clouds / some sun

  • Humid / more water vapor in the air

  • Could Rain

  • Light / Less Dense Air

Seasons

The earth's spin axis is tilted. This is what causes the seasons. When the earth's axis points towards the sun, it is summer for that hemisphere. When the earth's axis points away, winter can be expected.

Air Pressure

Air Pressure is also called Barometric Pressure.

If barometric pressure drops air pressure drops.

If something drops it gets low.

If something rises it gets higher.

Think back to pressure systems.....

La Nina vs El Nino

El Niño and La Niña are climate phenomena. The oceans switch between these two states roughly every two to seven years. But it depends on the wind and ocean conditions across the Pacific Ocean between Australia and South America. Typically,

La Niña = cooler and wetter, and El Niño = hotter and drier.

Think about pressure systems when looking at this map.

Where do you see high pressure?

Where do you see low pressure?
