Light is Energy Part 2
by Mr. Farmer
2
Properties of Light
Light is caused by the release of energy from tiny particles in matter
Matter: What all things are made of.
When they gain energy, they become "excited". This is done by heating them up.
Light bulb works this way.
Electricity flows in , tiny particles in metal move around, heat up, and energy is released as white light.
3
Behavior of Light
Light travels in a straight line until it its an object.
The hitting and bouncing of light is called a reflection.
Reflection: Bounce back
Smooth surfaces reflect in 1 direction.
Rough surfaces reflect in many directions, or scatter the light.
Scatter: To reflect in many directions.
4
Some objects allow light to pass through, but it bends. This is Refraction. Some material will cause light to slow down as well, like water.
The amount of bend depends on the material.
Refraction
5
When light enters an object without reflecting or refracting.
Tiny particles absorb certain colors. The remaining bounce off.
Absorption: taken in and not reflected or thrown back.
Absorption
6
Match
Match each behavior of light with its correct description
Reflection
Refraction
Absorption
The bouncing back of light when it hits a surface
The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another
The transfer of light energy to matter
The bouncing back of light when it hits a surface
The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another
The transfer of light energy to matter
7
Materials that Affect Light
8
Allows light to pass through without mixing or bouncing.
We can clearly see an object on the other side of transparent materials.
Example: clear glass
Transparent
9
Materials that let some light pass through. However, when light passes through, the material mixes up the light rays slightly
Translucent
10
Materials block or reflect all light.
Stop all light from coming through.
Examples: Wood, Steel, Humans
Opaque
11
Match
Match the definition with the vocab word.
opaque
transparent
translucent
Blocks all light
Allow all light to pass through
These materials allow most light to pass through
Blocks all light
Allow all light to pass through
These materials allow most light to pass through

13
Multiple Choice
These materials block or reflect all the light. You cannot see through these materials.
opaque
transparent

Which scientist conducted an experiment that proved that white light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow?
Jane Goodall
Albert Einstein
Isaac Newton
George Washington Carver
18
They curve inward.
Narrow center and thicker outer edges.
Light passes through and refract away from each other.
Items seen through this lens looks smaller.
Concave Lens
They curve outward.
Narrow outer edges and thicker center.
Light passes through and refract towards each other.
Items seen through this lens looks bigger.
Convex Lens
19
Labelling
Place the label on top of the correct type of lens.
Then determine whether the light converge in the middle or diverge outward towards the edges of the lens.
Convex
Concave
Converge
Diverge
20
Galileo Galilei used this to study planets and stars.
Convex glass that bends light to see far away planets.
Changed the way people thought about space.
Telescope
Instrument used to with either one or multiple convex lenses.
This is used to make extremely small objects visible.
Microscope
21
Light Phenomena
Rainbows, Optical illusions, and shadows
22
Rainbows occur when light passes through the raindrops.
Each drop acts as a prism, refracting the sun's white light into rainbow colors.
Rainbows
23
These are a trick of the eye. They show the difference between what your brain expects and what your eye sees.
Optical Illusions
24
These are caused by the absence of light.
Occur because light travels in a straight line. When light hits an opaque object, the object blocks the light on the other side.
Two parts: umbra and the penumbra
Umbra: darkest part
Penumbra: slightly lighter edge.
Some text here about the topic of discussion.
Shadows
25
Multiple Choice
When light strikes an opaque object, the object blocks the light from traveling through it. This produces a ______________ on the other side.
Rainbow
Optical Illusion
Shadow
