What are contractions?
Contractions are shortened forms of words.

What are some other contractions you can think of in English?

In French, when we want to say we are going somewhere, we must use the preposition à.
> The preposition "à" means "to" or "at" in French.
> When we use à in a sentence, we must form a contraction of à and the definite article of the noun that follows (the place you're going).
For example, "J'aime aller à la piscine"
I like going to the pool

Ok, but...what does this mean? How do we make these contractions?
First, determine what you'd like to say. For our example, we'll say that we are going to a café
Next, find the gender of the noun we'll be using in our sentence. In our example, we're using the noun "café".
TIP! : To find the gender of the noun, pay attention to it's article (un/une/des/le/la/les/l'). Example: Since café is a masculine noun, it uses the articles "un" and "le".
Then, make the appropriate contraction using the table on the slide 6. Since café uses the masculine article "le", we combine à + le to create au.
Finally, our sentence would look like this: Je vais au café. (I go to the café)
