Order of Operations

Today you're going to learn the order of operations.

This is just a fancy name for the rules that we have to follow when doing a problem like: 10 - 2 x 4 =

How would you try to solve that problem?

3

Basically, when we have a problem that has MORE THAN ONE operation sign:

-we have to Multiply/Divide FIRST

-then we Add/Subtract SECOND

Multiple Choice

30 ÷ 10 + 5 =30\ \div\ 10\ +\ 5\ =

Which part of this equation do we solve first?

( 30 ÷ 10 30\ \div\ 10\ ) or ( 10 + 510\ +\ 5 )

hint: multiplication and division go first, then addition or subtraction second

1

30 ÷ 330\ \div\ 3

2

10 + 510\ +\ 5

5

We would divide 30 by 10 FIRST.

(30 ÷ 10) + 5 =

Step 1. (30 ÷ 10) = 3

And then we have to do the second part of the problem, which is to add 5!

Step 2. (3 + 5) = 8

So 8 is our final answer! Did you get the same answer?

6

Multiple Choice

You try one on your own!

14 + 4 ÷ 2 =14\ +\ 4\ \div\ 2\ =

Did you get 16?

If so, yay!

With 14 + 4 ÷ 2, we would want to divide first because multiplication and division go first, then addition and subtraction happen next.

So 4 ÷ 2 = 2

Then we make sure to add the 14 to it too! 14 + 2 = 16

multiplication and division go first, then addition or subtraction second

Great Job!

If you finished this lesson and are still confused, it's okay! We will keep practicing.
